MANNING - Louise Gamble Thompson, 103, widow of Joseph DuRant Thompson, Sr., died Saturday, May 22, 2021, at Roper Hospice Cottage in Mt. Pleasant.
Born July 23, 1917, in Manning, she was a daughter of the late Sheriff James Edward Gamble, Sr. and the late Maude Weatherford Gamble. She was an active member of the Presbyterian Church at Manning for seventy years where she was a former Sunday School teacher, Bible School teacher and Circle Chairman. Mrs. Thompson was so proud to be the recipient of a beautiful pin and certificate for an Honorary Lifetime Membership by the women of the church. The president had so many nice things to say about her.
She was a clerk and bookkeeper for the Clarendon Drug Company for seventeen years. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post #68 for over sixty years, having served as membership chairman and was honored by the unit as a dedicated and outstanding officer when she retired after serving twenty-eight years as Treasurer of the auxiliary. Mrs. Thompson was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and her family was her pride and joy. She enjoyed playing bridge and was an avid player.
She is survived by two sons, Dr. Joseph DuRant Thompson, Jr. and wife, Jackie, of Mt. Pleasant and James Robert Thompson and wife, Jane, of Gaffney; six grandchildren, Joseph DuRant Thompson III and wife, Alison, Jennifer Thompson Way and husband, Leonard, of Mt. Pleasant, Andrew Gamble Thompson and wife, Melanie, of Mt. Pleasant, James Robert Thompson, Jr. and wife, Mai, of Chandler, AZ, Dr. Malissa Thompson Mathis and husband, Joe, of Gaffney and Dr. Melanie Thompson Davis and husband, Dr. Brandon, of Spartanburg; fifteen great grandchildren, Andrew Gamble Thompson, Jr., Graham Alexander Thompson, Riley Griffith Thompson, Burke DuRant Thompson, Leonard Christenberry Way, James Robert Thompson III, Jordan Joseph Mathis, Tyler Brandon David, Cooper Scott Davis, Katherine Jane Mathis, Lauren Malissa Mathis, Jacqueline Ann Thompson, Amelia Lee Way, Elyssa Mai Thompson and Savannah Stinson Davis; and a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Marion Cooper "Fuzzy" Thompson; four brothers, Earl B. Gamble, William E. Gamble, Milton I. Gamble and James Edward Gamble, Jr.; and four sisters, Dottie G. Davis, Margaret G. McFaddin, Thelma G. DuBose and Wilma G. Odom.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, May 26, 2021, at the Presbyterian Church at Manning with the Rev. Lee Davis officiating. Burial will follow in the Manning Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be nephews.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 25, 2021, at Stephens Funeral Home.
