Louise Nathan passed away from Covid on March 4th at BayState Medical Center. She was 100 years old.
Louise was born on September 29, 1920 and grew up in Springfield. She graduated from Classical High School and attended Syracuse University, which she left after two years to marry Jerry Nathan, her high school sweetheart. Thirty years later, she graduated magna cum laude from the University of Connecticut.
Jerry and Louise were devoted to each other over the course of their 74-year marriage. Manchester, Connecticut was their home for 55 years, where they contributed their creative and leadership talents to various community organizations and to their synagogue, Temple Beth Shalom. After Jerry's retirement, they traveled extensively, including support of the Refuseniks in the former Soviet Union, trips to China and many other interesting, well-researched destinations. Jerry and Louise moved to Glenmeadow in Longmeadow 13 years ago, where they enjoyed many new friendships. Jerry passed away in April, 2016.
Louise enjoyed a sharp mind, a remarkable memory and wonderful sense of humor throughout her 100 years. She was an avid reader of history and had a special interest in the extraordinary stories of survival and heroism surrounding the holocaust. She was the principal source of information about family history from both sides of the genealogical tree. Her memory of multigenerational relationships, as well as family legends, was remarkable. She was the family archivist and made it her mission to put together numerous albums of photos accompanied by her hand written notes identifying generations of ancestors for future generations.
Louise was beloved by family and friends. She will be missed by her sister, Doris Feinstein of Framingham, Ma. She leaves her sons, Larry Nathan and his wife Nancy of Longmeadow, and Jim Nathan and his wife Hedy of Bolton, Ct. Louise reveled in the growth and accomplishments of her grandchildren - David Nathan and his wife Marie of Longmeadow; and Debbie (Nathan) Jackson and her husband Marty of Holden, Ma.; Rebecca (Nathan) Ladabouche and her husband Kevin of Hebron, Ct.; and Jessica (Nathan) Stasiowski and her husband Jeff of Tolland, Ct.
Louise found special joy in visits from, and entertaining stories about, her 8 great grandchildren, who range in age from 25 years to 7 months. Justin and Samantha Nathan; Ryan, Talia and Lexi Jackson; Ellie and Reese Ladabouche; and Juliette Stasiowski. They will forever treasure their memories of their Bubbie.
A family graveside service will be held at Temple Beth Shalom, B'nai Israel memorial park in Manchester, Ct. Suggested donations in Louise's memory may be made to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C. The Ascher-Zimmerman Funeral Home is helping the family.
