Louis "Louie" Bernard Szatko
Louis B. Szatko was born October 21, 1915 in Platte County, Nebraska to Ingnatius "James" and Victoria (Gembica) Szatko. Louis worked in Barnesville, Minnesota as a farm hand for five years before joining the U.S. Army in June 1941. Louis was stationed in the Northwest Territories, Canada and then to Central Europe, particularly the Rhineland area in Germany and France building bridges, cleaning underground railroad track and operating heavy equipment during WWII. After his discharge in November 1945 he worked at Swift Packing in Omaha, then going to work as a heavy machine operator at Meese Consrtuction in Wahoo, Siroski Construction in David City, Tworek/Gonka Construction in Columbus and working a short time at Swift Packing in Columbus. He was employed by St. Mary's Hospital, managing the hospital farm from 1955-1957. He then worked in the hospital maintenance department becoming the chief engineer until the merger of St. Mary's and Behlen Hospital, when he assumed the position of director of Maintenance. Louis retired in 1982.
He married Catherine Eva Pensick on August 21, 1951 at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Columbus. He enjoyed his home, listening to polka music and spending time with his relatives and friends. Memorials are suggested to St. Anthonys Catholic Church
