Louis George Petersen, 94, of Selbyville, DE died on February 2, 2021, at Atlantic General Hospital in Berlin, MD succumbing to a COVID-19 infection. He was born November 13, 1926, in Brooklyn, NY; son of the late Harold Petersen and Grace Simpson. He was pre-deceased by his wife of 68 years, Norma Ruth Kenvin Petersen, and his two sisters, Ethel and Doris. He is survived by his three daughters, Leslie Fisher (Gordon) of PA, Dr. Wendy Carter of MI, Diana Wiggs (Jim) of DE, eight grandchildren Bryan (Cassandra), Megan (Mike), Jeffrey (Kristina), Maureen (Michael), Meredith (Kevin), Ellen (Jon), Alex, and Lauren; and eleven great-grandchildren.
He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in August 1944 and served as an Aviation Electronics Technician Mate Third Class at Saufley Field, Pensacola, FL. He was awarded the American Theatre Medal and the Victory Medal for his service and honorably discharged from active duty in July 1946. He was educated at Adelphi University and New York University completing his baccalaureate degree and graduate work in electrical engineering. He was employed at Ward Leonard Electric Company where his projects included lighting controls for the NY Metropolitan Opera House and the 1964 World's Fair Globe. He went on to work at A.O. Smith and Reliance Electric Corporations. He moved his family from Seaford, NY, in 1968 to Cheshire, CT, where he was an active member of the United Methodist Church for 52 years. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren were his pride and joy. Their memories include tennis and swimming at Copper Valley and walks in the woods with the golden retrievers. Lou was gentle and kind. He liked too much sugar on his cereal, made his own crab cakes and homemade jam, and enjoyed whiskey sours, golf, and family vacations on the beach. He will be remembered for his love of family. A memorial service will be held at a later date this summer. There are no calling hours and burial will be held at the convenience of the family.
