Louis (Lou) Michael McGee, Jr., age 90, of Bloomington passed away Thursday, July 15, 2021 at the I.U. Bloomington Hospice House. Born October 27, 1930 in Washington, Indiana, he was the son of Louis Michael McGee, Sr. and Julia Josephine (Smith) McGee. Lou was a star basketball player at Washington Catholic High School where they were the first parochial school in the state of Indiana to win a sectional title in 1947. He received a full scholarship to play basketball at the University of Georgia where he earned a Bachelor of Education and was a member of the Army ROTC. He married the love of his life, Betty Jane (Evans) McGee, also of Washington, on April 11th 1955 at St. Simon's Catholic Church.
After marriage, the happy couple traveled to Europe where Lou proudly served in the U.S. Army as a 2nd Lieutenant, Range Safety Officer, and Escort Officer. In 1960, Lou and Betty moved to Bloomington, Indiana and Lou began his career at R.C.A./Thomson Consumer Electronics. For over 30 years, Lou oversaw logistics and procurement before retiring in 1991. Lou was an avid I.U. Hoosier and Georgia Bulldog Basketball fan. He was a founding member of St. John the Apostle Catholic Church.
Lou is survived by four children, Teresa "Terri" Taylor and husband, Barry; Cynthia "Cindy" Bowling and husband, Jim; Michael "Mike" McGee and wife, Alison; and Bradley "Brad" McGee and wife, Anna. Lou will also be fondly remembered by his eight grandchildren, Sabrina, Casandra, Leighla, Kristy, Rachel, Ryan, Katherine, and Gavin, eight great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.
Lou is survived by his three sisters, Barbara Spear, Rosemary Mitchell and Ordette Jones and brother, Daniel McGee. Lou was preceded in death by his parents, his loving wife of 61 years, and one brother and sister, Donnie Joe McGee and Betty Jean McGee, both at an early age.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, July 21, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Deremiah-Frye Mortuary, Greene and Harrell Chapel; 700 W. Gourley Pike. On Thursday, July 22, visitation will be held at 10:00 a.m., followed by funeral services at 11:00 a.m. at St. John the Apostle Catholic Church, 4607 W. State Rd 46 in Bloomington. Interment will follow in Valhalla Memory Gardens Mausoleum.
