Mr. Lonny L. Ashburn
Mr. Lonny L. Ashburn, age 75, of Deputy, Indiana entered this life on October 12, 1945 in Sullivan, Indiana. He was the son of Robert and Roberta Martin Ashburn. He graduated from North Central High School in Farmersburg and Indiana State University in Terre Haute. He then served in the United States Army and rose to the rate of Specialist Five serving as a aircraft repairman at Phu Loi Base Camp, Vietnam. He was honorably discharged on November 8, 1969 at Fort Dix, New Jersey receiving the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, and Vietnam Service Medal with Two Overseas Bars. After returning from the service, he lived in the Indianapolis area for a short time then moved to Jefferson County, Indiana, where he raised his family and worked as the Materials Manager for Reliance Electric/Rockwell Automation in Madison. After retirement, he worked part-time at Glauber's Sports in Carrollton, Kentucky.
Lonny enjoyed hunting, fishing, and the occasional sip of whiskey. He had a wry sense of humor, and loved ones always knew they were in his good graces when he told them, "I wouldn't trade you for a good squirrel dog." He was an inventive carpenter; his outdoor furniture can be found throughout Kentuckiana area, and his workshop--where he spent much of his free time--reflected his practical aesthetics and ingenuity. Lonny was also an avid reader, and in later years, he began writing short essays about his childhood and experiences. He was a member of the Madison VFW Post No. 1969. Lonny passed away on Monday, September 6, 2021 after a long illness at his home. The family would like to thank the home health care workers who helped care for Lonny, and the many of his friends who visited and kept in touch during his illness.
Lonny will be missed by his loving wife of 32 years, Ann Armbruster Ashburn of Deputy, Indiana; his daughter, Jennifer "Jen" Ashburn (Jason Irwin) of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; his son, Christopher "Chris" Ashburn of Bloomington, Indiana; his grandchildren, Kalyn and Jackson Ashburn of Solsberry, Indiana; his sisters, Patty Osburn (Jim) of Fairbanks, Indiana, Linda Gootee (Jim) of Santa Claus, Indiana; several nieces, nephews and other relatives. He is also survived by Ann's children by a previous marriages, John Bruns of Madison, Indiana, Joni Glauber of Carrollton, Kentucky, Jill Marsh of Madison, Indiana; his step grandchildren, Ann Kay, William Andrew, Jessica Ann, Jaclyn Shea, Jamie Leigh, John Logan, Melody Ann, Robert Mitchell, and Matthew Charles. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Ashburn and Roberta Martin Ashburn Thompson. Funeral services will be conducted Friday, September 10, 2021, at 1:00 p.m., at the Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre, 325 Demaree Drive in Madison, Indiana. Interment will follow in the Indiana Veterans Memorial Cemetery,1415 North Gate Road in Madison, Indiana. Friends may visit Friday from 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. at the Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre, 325 Demaree Drive in Madison, Indiana. A final salute with military honors will be provided by the Major Samuel Woodfill Post No. 9 of the American Legion. Memorial contributions may be made to the St Jude Children's Research Hospital.
