Lois Wisthuff, of La Grange Park, IL passed away January 11, 2021 at the age of 88. Kind and caring; determined and dependable; her life was rooted in family, faith and friendship.
Family was the cornerstone of Lois’s life and she was the ultimate comfort, confidant and cheerleader to all. She was married to her loving husband Ron for 65 years and together they had three sons — Scott, who passed away in 2018, Mark, and Kurt. Her boys married three wonderful women, her “daughters” — Sally, Sue, and Deanna. She was especially proud of her grandchildren — Evan and his wife Katie, Alison, Rachel and her husband Sam, David, Isaac, and Charlotte, and recent great-grandchildren — Edith and Luke. Lois loved hosting family get-togethers filled with perfectly planned meals, board game battles and lots of laughter around the table.
Lois was born in South Bend, IN, in 1932 to Ernest and Hazel Roesti. Her dad was an Evangelical United Brethren minister and she and her older sister Betty (Mercer Island, WA) grew up in a structured, loving environment which shaped her steady approach to life and commitment to faith. She was a member of First United Methodist Church of La Grange for over 50 years and served at various times as a Sunday school member and teacher, worship leader, bell choir member, and chair of altar guild. Many of her fondest memories and friendships were formed at church.
Lois attended Mishawaka High School and North Central College where she was editor of the school newspaper, sang alto in the concert choir, met her future husband and developed lifelong relationships. After graduation, she began her working career as a middle school English teacher in Riverside, IL and later served as director of the Methodist Preschool of La Grange and as an assistant in the audio-visual department at Lyons Township High School, back when overhead projectors were a thing!
Lois was an active member of PEO chapter EW and enjoyed the camaraderie of the group. At home, she loved to needlepoint, play the piano and cheer on the Cubs and Illini. And she always made time for the daily crossword puzzle and reading a good book. She loved all the dogs in her life, especially beagles!, and enjoyed seeing her “granddogs” — Cooper, Rusty, and Cole — when she could.
To honor Lois, a Methodist Preschool scholarship fund has been created to help families in need.
