Lois Gray Henschen passed away July 29, 2022 at Haven Hospice in Gainesville, Florida. Born December 17, 1924 in Millville, now part of Panama City, Florida, she was the youngest child of Joseph Sylvester Gray and Julia Philips Gray. After graduating from Florida State University, she married Dr. Joseph R. Henschen and moved to St. Cloud, Florida where she lived for over 70 years. Lois worked as a guidance counselor at St. Cloud Middle School and was a longstanding member of First Presbyterian Church in St. Cloud.
Lois is preceded in death by her parents and siblings: Mary Gray Minge, Corine Gray Lindley, Shelton Gray, Philip Gray, Nelda Gray Furey and Jack Gray. Her husband Joe also preceded her in death five years ago. She is survived by her children Martha Henschen Lee and Joseph E. (Gray) Henschen, five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and many loving nieces and nephews.
Lois was an outgoing and curious woman with many hobbies and interests. She was a blue ribbon-winning quilter, an avid bridge player and a voracious reader. She and Joe took up hiking and camping, making many months-long trips to explore the United States and Canada. They enjoyed travel in general, visiting many countries overseas, and both enjoyed the theater. Lois raised orchids, loved to entertain and chronicled her life in journals and photographs. She had a great love of and commitment to her extended family of siblings, nieces, nephews and cousins; this passion led to an interest in genealogy and research into the histories of both Gray and Henschen family lineages.
No funeral service will be held for Lois, per her request. Her ashes and Joe's will be spread by her immediate family on Alligator Lake, their longtime home in St. Cloud, at a later date. Any donation in Lois' memory may be made to First Presbyterian Church at 909 10th Street, St. Cloud, Florida 34769 or Gainesville Community Ministry, 238 SW 4th Avenue, Gainesville, Florida 32601.
