Lloyd Harris Griffin, Ill, died July 23, 2024, after a short illness. Mr. Griffin was born April 18, 1943, in Newnan, GA, and grew up in Rome. Many close to him knew him as "Topper". He attended Rome High School, West Rome High School, and graduated from Darlington School where he excelled in track & field; Lloyd earned a varsity track letter and was inducted into ODK National Leadership Honor Society at Auburn University. He graduated as a steadfast War Eagle in 1964 after serving as president of his fraternity. Mr. Griffin also served in the U.S. Air Force - GA Air National Guard.
Mr. Griffin was involved in finance and community activities in Atlanta and Marietta where he lived with his family. In 1978 he returned to Rome, as proprietor of Bagby Transfer, Summit Distributing, Stor-it Mini Warehouses and, most recently, was associated with Toles, Temple, and Wright Real Estate. Mr. Griffin placed great value in supporting his local community. He was a graduate of Leadership Georgia; a Past President of Rome Rotary Club; former Chairman of Rome and Floyd County Industrial Development Commission; served on Rome Floyd Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and on the Board of Directors of United Way of Rome & Floyd County; was on the Board of Trustees of Darlington School, Redmond Regional Medical Center, and Director of SunTrust Bank of Northwest Georgia.
Mr. Griffin was first and foremost a family man who prized travels and quiet time with his family. He was also an avid sportsman, outdoorsman, and had a deep appreciation for history. He was known for the "men's tennis group" at Coosa Country Club, and enjoyed trips to Hilton Head with special friends. He thrived in the outdoors: fishing in the small streams of north Georgia and Tennessee, at New Smyrna Beach, and Lake Weiss. He logged countless miles to the House of Dreams at Berry College, and various sections of the Appalachian trail in western North Carolina with his family. Mr. Griffin was an avid gardener. He was certified as a Master Gardener as part of the state's Master Gardener Extension Volunteer training program.
While he had many interests and community engagements, the most meaningful for him was being a longtime communicant of St. Peter's Episcopal Church, where he served on the vestry, headed stewardship and building campaigns, ushered, as well as other positions within the church or its local outreach endeavors. He was part of the first men's shelter at the church that evolved into community organizations to assist the local homeless community. Lloyd was preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd Harris Griffin, Jr; Evelyn Fuller Griffin; and his sister, Karye Griffin Hines.
Lloyd Harris Griffin, IIl is survived by his devoted wife of 21 years, Donna Jacks Lindsey Griffin, whose treasured memories include gatherings with family and friends, weekends at Lake Weiss, and impromptu travel adventures.
Also surviving are his son Lloyd Harris Griffin, V (Amy), of Port Aransas, TX, and daughters Margaret Neil "Neily" Hartwig (UIf), of Charleston, SC, and Marion Virginia Wester Griffin of Hot Springs, NC; grandchildren Lloyd Harris "Quinn" Griffin V (Samantha), Della and Margaret Griffin; Max and Werner "Buzz" Hartwig; and Forest and Gus Cook; his extended family includes Andrew McDonald Lindsey (Susan), Washington, DC, Sarah Lindsey McCrea, Marietta, and Todd Harper Lindsey (Jessica) of Rome; as well as Eva and Harper Lindsey: Lindsay, Elise, and Caroline McCrea; and Ophelia Lindsey.
Survivors also include his brother-in-law, the Rev. Dr. William "Bill" Hines, beloved nieces, Katherine "Kathie" Pierce, Evelyn "Eve" Hanie, and Gena Hines Taylor, and their families. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd Harris Griffin, Jr., and Evelyn Fuller Griffin; and his sister, Kayre Griffin Hines, of Sautee and Cleveland GA.
Mr. Griffin was a true gentleman who never met a stranger. His infectious smile, bowtie, true grit, and genuine concern for others will always be remembered by those many lives he touched.
The family would also like to show great appreciation to all the staff at Renaissance Marquis Memory Care Unit, The Harbor.
A celebration of life service will be held at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, 101 East Fourth Avenue, Rome, on July 31,2024 at 11:00 o'clock with Father John Herring, celebrant. Interment immediately follows for the family in the church Memorial Garden.
Friends are invited to a reception after the service in Daniel Hall.
