Lionel Francis "Andy" Andrade Jr., 72, of Comfort, passed away Monday, Jan. 15, 2024.
Andy was born Aug. 9, 1951 to Lionel Francis Andrade Sr. and Catalina Andrade (nee Calurio) in Honolulu, Hawaii. He grew up in Hawaii and graduated from Aiea High School in 1969 and joined the Air Force in 1970. The Air Force ultimately brought him to Texas, working under high clearance for the Air Force Security Service in information technology. Following his time in the Air Force, he continued in the military in the National Guard. He served our country for a total of 13 years before pursuing IT work at what was originally Data Point and eventually moved on to USAA where he stayed for almost 30 years, retiring in 2015. He held two patents, involving scanning, imaging and automating documents, that were granted to him during his time at USAA.
Andy was an avid bass fisherman, hunter and target-shooter. He spent many hours on his bass boats, even competing and winning tournaments. He loved to spend time with his grandchildren, teaching them to shoot and fish. There was no end to his skill as he was a talented and award-winning artist. He spent time riding through the Hill Country on his motorcycle, enjoying as much time as possible in the outdoors with the animals and incredible world that God created. In his later years, he cultivated an impressive gasp of koi fish he lovingly referred to as "The Pigs."
Although Andy was proud of his Hawaiian roots, he was a true Texan and known for his smoked brisket.
He married Deborah Andrade (nee Smith) in 2017 and together they lived in Comfort, Texas.
He is survived by a sister, Sharleen Andrade, and brother, Jeffery Andrade, both of Oahu.
He had two daughters with his first wife, Nancy: Michelle Cuellar (Carlos) of Helotes, Texas, and Melissa Hajek (Brian) of Boerne, Texas.
Survivors also include four grandchildren: Brianna Arocha, Allanna Cuellar, Miles Cuellar and Zachary Hajek.
He is preceded in death by his parents and brother, Vernon Andrade.
Andy will be greatly missed by all, and his sense of wonder, creativity and playful humor will never be forgotten!
A funeral service was held Thursday, Feb. 8, at 12 noon, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 304 W. San Antonio St., Fredericksburg, Texas.
