Linda Sue Durmon was born on November 30, 1946 in Beaumont, Texas. She attended French High School, and she went to be with her Lord and Savior on Thursday, December 30, 2021 at St. Elizabeth Hospital. She and her husband of 56 years, Jerry, resided in Beaumont. Linda graduated from Lamar University in August 1980 with a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education and received her Master of Education in Administration on May 14, 1994.
Linda worked as an elementary educator, beginning her career in the Beaumont Independent School District as a Special Education Teacher's Aide in 1974. In 1980 she accepted a position in the Vidor Independent School District where she would ultimately spend the next 31 years making a difference in the lives of many children, a deep passion that she was very proud of. Every child mattered to her and it showed with the abundant love she shared. In 1980 she began as a Kindergarten Teacher at Pine Forest Elementary and moved to Assistant Principal at Vidor Elementary in 1994. In 2001 she became the district's Director of Special Programs and ended her career as the Principal of Vidor Elementary in 2006, retiring in June 2011. During her teaching at Pine Forest Elementary, she created the Young Mentor Reading Program, where older students read to younger students and the START Program (Start Today Actively Reading Together) where students read together prior to morning classes. Linda was well-known for her educational philosophy and teaching approach. In all of her years of service, she was recognized for many outstanding achievements including Teacher of the Year, Lamar University Student Teaching 1980; Honor Society Member, Phi Kappa Phi August 1980; Honor Graduate Lamar University 1980; Teacher of the Year, Pine Forest Elementary; Region V Special Education Teacher of the Year, The Council for Exceptional Children 1985-1986. In 2003 she was instrumental in leading the VISD to 100% compliance in Special Programs and Special Education during the Texas Education Agency's month-long review called the District Effectiveness and Compliance (DEC) review. She also spent many years of service within the church community, serving as Director of Vacation Bible School, Children's Church School Coordinator, Day School Board Member and Day School Teacher at North End United Methodist Church, as well as Sunday School Teacher at Wesley United Methodist Church (previously North End United Methodist Church).
She is preceded in death by her husband Jerry Durmon; father Harold Lee of Beaumont, mother Peggy Sanderson and step father Perry Sanderson of Beaumont.
She is survived by her daughter Sandra Cull of Lumberton; daughter Lorna Angelo and husband Dean of Phoenix; sister Lorrie Altom and husband Jerry of Beaumont; brother Perry Sanderson II and wife Darla of Sour Lake; granddaughter Kristin Diaz of Beaumont; granddaughter Kaitlin Hall and husband Troy of Houston; grandson Christopher Cull of Beaumont; grandson Dean Angelo, Jr. of Phoenix; granddaughter Laura Hitt and husband Joe of West Des Moines, IA; granddaughter Aubrey Charbonneau and husband Scott of Cheektowaga, NY; great grandsons Michael Mendez of Beaumont; Cristian Hitt and Bryson Hitt of West Des Moines, IA; Colton Charbonneau of Cheektowaga, NY; great granddaughters Nevaeh Mendez of Beaumont and Everly Hall of Houston and many nieces and nephews she loved.
Funeral services will be held at Forest Lawn Funeral Home. Visitation will be held from 5-8 pm Thursday, January 6th. Services will be held at 2:00 pm on Friday, January 7th. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park.
