Libby Lynch Landman, 91, passed away on February 10, 2021, at Care Dimensions Hospice in Lincoln, MA. Thoughtful and generous, devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend.
Libby, daughter of Isadore and Shirley Geller, sister of Morton Geller, was born in 1929 and grew up in Springfield, Massachusetts. While in high school, she met Jerome Sydney Lynch, also of Springfield. In 1949, they married, building an enduring partnership, interrupted by his untimely passing in 1974. For most of their marriage, Libby and Jerry lived in Larchmont, NY, where they raised their three children. During this time, Libby formed life-long friendships and a love of New York. She remained a New Yorker at heart wherever she lived.
Libby married Chaplain Nathan Landman in 1977. Libby and Nathan shared many enriching travelling experiences in Europe and Israel, and lived in a variety of places, including Madrid, Spain. In 1981, they moved back to Larchmont, NY, and in 2009 to Edgewood Retirement Community in North Andover, MA. Nathan passed in 2017.
Libby started her college education as a young mother in the early 1960's, attending NYU Sunrise Semester classes at home on closed-circuit TV. Over the years, she earned degrees in Russian Literature, Library Science, and Public Administration. She worked for many years as a librarian at the Larchmont Public Library, her favorite job. Her intellectual curiosity never satisfied, at Edgewood she served as secretary on the board, took harp lessons, and remained an avid reader and political observer.
Everyone who knew Libby has memories and stories of the famously elaborate birthday parties, Thanksgiving dinners, Passover seders, and afternoon teas that Libby prepared with her careful planning, creativity, attention to detail, and endless stamina. She applied these talents to everything she chose to take on in her life.
Nothing gave Libby more pride or pleasure than her children and grandchildren. She took great joy in celebrating our accomplishments, for example, a tour of Rachel's newly-purchased home in Boston, hearing about Natasha's committed and selfless work at the Lowell Humane Society, and attending a student art show featuring Alexa's artwork. She never stopped thinking about how she could help us during the times that we struggled. And help us she did, over and over.
Libby is survived by her daughter Priscilla and partner Cindy Lanane of Indianapolis, IN, son Jonathan and wife Cindy of Albuquerque, NM, son Andrew and wife Lynne of Chelmsford, MA, and granddaughters Rachel, Natasha, and Alexa.
Donations can be made to Temple Beth El, Springfield, MA, the Yiddish Book Center, and the American Kidney Fund. The family plans to hold private burial and a virtual memorial service.
