Lewis Daniel Baxter, 75, of Savannah, GA, passed away peacefully February 3, 2021.
Lew was born May 13, 1945 in Minneapolis, MN to John and Mary (Eaton) Baxter. After graduating from Wayland Academy in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin, he entered Macalester College, majoring in Classics, graduating in 1967.
After leaving Macalester, Lew joined the Air Force and as a pilot served in Vietnam. Returning home, he continued to serve in Wichita, Kansas, and in Washington, D.C., at the Pentagon, rising to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. In Tampa, he proudly worked for United States Central Command and Special Operations Command. He then relocated to the city of Savannah, Georgia, working for nonprofit organizations, and he retired there.
Lew was a loving husband, father, brother, and friend, a generous and loyal companion. He was proud of his service to his country and loved to tell stories about his years as a pilot and budget analyst in the Pentagon. He had many hobbies and interests, including travel and history, geology, coin collections, movies, and politics.
He will be interred in Arlington National Cemetery.
He is survived by Candy Baxter; his son, John Thayer Baxter; and his brother, Charles Baxter.
