Lester H. Whitaker, 78 of Vernon, Vt. died Saturday (11-6-2021) at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, Lebanon, N.H. surrounded by his friends. He was born in Greenfield, Ma. on August 1, 1943 the son of Wallace and Hattie (Johnson) Whitaker. Lester was educated in Vernon schools and was graduate of Brarrtleboro Union High School. He went immediately to work on the family farm, The Whitaker Farm in Vernon, Vt. and eventually became the owner and operator of the farm. He was an eccentric icon in Vernon. He loved his family especially his parents. He was known as being very patriotic, and was an Early American and Civil War enthusiast. He enjoyed operating his cannon, and country music and watching westerns. He was former member of the Vernon Volunteer Fire Dept. and a member of the Vernon Union Church. He donated over the years family artifacts to the Vernon Historical Society. Known as a great story teller, he loved to give nicknames to all his friends including Cannonball Jim. He was a weight lifter for over 50 years and loved Maggie. He loved to work on his farm machines and run his gravel pit, where he encouraged his friends to target practice.
He is survived by two cousins, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be Thursday (11-11-2021) at 11:00 A.M. at the Vernon Union Church, 2631 Ft. Bridgman Rd. Vernon, Vt. The Rev. Steve Dunklee, Pastor will officate. Burial will follow in Tyler Cemetery, Vernon, Vt.
