LESTER STUART BORDEN, Lester Stuart Borden, a loving husband, father, and grandfather, skilled surgeon, and diligent cruciverbalist passed away on February 10, 2021 after a heroic 28-year battle with prostate cancer. Les was born on December 2, 1939 in Patterson, New Jersey to Lester and Marjorie (Healy) Borden and spent his childhood in New York City, Buffalo, and Philadelphia. He received a mechanical engineering degree from Virginia Tech and worked as a naval architect until an interest was sparked in joint replacement. He then attended New York Medical College and completed an internship at St. Vincent's Hospital and Medical Center in New York City. During this time, he met his best friend, future wife, lifelong nurse, and social coordinator, Jean. After his NYU residency and an Otto E. Aufranc fellowship at New England Baptist Hospital, Les began his 35-year career as an orthopedic surgeon at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in 1975 as the head of the section of joint replacement and arthritic surgery. During his career, he performed well over 10,000 complex joint replacement surgeries, trained over 100 subspecialty hip and knee surgeons, participated on the editorial board of multiple academic publications, presented more than 250 faculty presentations, was a founding member of The Knee Society, and served on the Cleveland Clinic's Board of Governors and Board of Trustees. Every friend, colleague, and patient appreciated his humility, easy-going demeanor, and sense of humor. While reconstructive surgery was his true passion, he endlessly searched for the perfect golf swing, the best pasta recipe, and a national championship for the Hokies.
He is survived by his wife of nearly 49 years Jean and five children, Les Jr. (Beth) Borden, Kristine (Danny) Whigham, Katherine (Ed) Costello, Andrew Borden, and Julia Borden. Les also will be lovingly remembered by his siblings Joan (George) Eltringham, Neil (Nancy) Borden, and Dave (Tina) Borden and countless more extended family, friends and colleagues. Above all else, his greatest joy was time spent as a grandfather and Bebop will forever hold a special place in the hearts of Jack, James, and Caitlin Borden; Danny, Taylor, and Graeme Whigham; and Seamus, Colin, and Maggie Costello. A celebration of life will be planned in the future.
