Lester Earl Godwin, III departed this life on August 4, 2022 at the age of 80, in Dallas, Texas. A memorial service will be held at St. Justin Episcopal Church in Canton, Texas, on Sunday August 7th at 3 pm.
Lester was born November 20, 1941 in Dallas to Elizabeth and Lester Godwin, Jr. He was raised in Dallas, graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1959 and Southern Methodist University in 1963. He married his beloved wife Linda in 1962 and was blessed with two sons, Les and Todd. Throughout his life he cared greatly for the comfort and well-being of his parents, family and children. But his love and caring for Linda, his "steady girl" since August 7, 1957 and wife of 60 years was strong beyond measure, and relentless without pause.
In his home town of Canton, he had many friends and a profound impact on numerous lives. He was actively involved in his church, St. Justin Episcopal, serving tirelessly with love and devotion. He served three times as Senior Warden on the governing board, at times guiding the church through difficult challenges with wisdom and a steady hand.
Another passion was his service to the community through his membership to the Canton Chapter of the Lion's Club. He joined the Lion's Club in 2000 and ultimately rose to serve as club President in 2005. After his tenure as President, he remained and served as Second Vice President until his death. While in the Lion's Club for many years his contributions included working on, and ultimately organizing the annual Christmas Food Drives and annual golf tournament fund raisers. He was particularly passionate about his membership in the Century Club to support the Texas Lions Camp for challenged children.
Lester is survived by his wife Linda; brother, David Godwin (Barbi); two sons, Les (Stacy) and Todd Godwin; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his brother James Godwin.
