Boonville - Leon U. Laux, 96, formerly of Schuyler Street passed away on January 27, 2021 at Sunset Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, Boonville.
He was born in Utica, NY on November 18, 1924 a son of Leon and Laura Utley Laux. The family lived on Academy Street where he grew up. He graduated from Boonville High School in 1943. He was drafted into the United States Army in 1943 and fought in the Battle of Normandy serving in the 29th Infantry. He was awarded the Purple Heart and the Good Conduct Medal for wounds received at St. Lo and was honorably discharged in 1946. Leon was employed at Union Fork & Hoe for 20 years, first in Frankfort and retiring from the Herkimer plant. He married Margaret Elis Rockwell in 1972. She passed away in 2004. Leon attended R.I.T. and Utica College where he studied art. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Harland Hennessey V.F.W. and D.A.V. He enjoyed drawing sketches, painting, sailing, watching sports on TV and spending holidays with his family. He had a great love for cats and dogs. Leon wrote a book about his time spent in the service during World War II.

Surviving are a sister-in-law, Florence Laux; nieces and nephews, William and Mary Kay Laux and their daughter, Caitlyn, Karen Laux, Cheryl Laux and children, Andrew, Kendra and Megan Trimbach and Douglas and Brenda Shaffer and their children, Dalton and Mackenzie; several close cousins; step children, Douglas and Pat Rockwell, Betty and Wayne Laribee, Linda Evans, Richard Rockwell, Michael and Mary Dion; several step grand grandchildren and step great grand children. He was predeceased by step daughters, Nancy Reed and Sandy Rockwell and a brother, Robert Laux in 2019.
A graveside service will be held in the spring at Beechwood Cemetery, Forestport with military rights. There are no calling hours. Memorial contributions in his name may be made to the Harland J.
