Leo M. Daly, 92, of Pittsfield, Massachusetts, passed away on Saturday February 19th, with his loving family by his side at Mount Greylock Extended Care Facility.
Leo M. Daly born in Pittsfield, Massachusetts on February 21, 1929, was the son of the late Elizabeth Rocheleau and Leo Daly.
Leo is the proud father of 3 children, Kimberly Clark (Mike Clark)of Pittsfield, Donna Daly-Keen (Peter Simmons) Lee, MA, and Michael L. Daly of Richmond, MA. He also leaves his sister Betty May, his former spouse, Barbara J. Lamke and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Leo was predeceased by his sisters, Louisa Flynn (Arnold Flynn), Florence Hart (Clifford Hart), Rosemary Brown (Donald Brown), and Gloria Daly.
Leo spent 4 years in the United States Air Force as an Airman 1st Class (A1C). He was a Korean War veteran and trained as a laboratory technician, who graduated from the Air Force Medical Laboratory School at San Antonio, Texas.
He joined Massachusetts Fisheries & Wildlife in 1956 where he severed in the Central District for 12 years. While working here, he built and ran the district laboratory and often said, "This was the most enjoyable time of my career."
In 1968, he transferred to the Western District Head Quarters as Fisheries Manager where he remained until he retired in 1998. He spent more than 42 years with Massachusetts Fisheries & Wildlife. During his time with the division, he held the title of Aqueduct Biologist, Fisheries Manager, and interim District Manager.
In the 30 years Leo spent as the District Fisheries Manager and Aquatic Resource, he stocked over 1.5 million trout for Western Massachusetts and he was involved in a variety of Catch and Release Programs for the state. Leo was also in charge of the North County paraplegic deer hunt for 22 years and he frequently was a guest speaker on aquatic biology at various universities and colleges. Additionally, he received many awards such as Outstanding Dedication, Service Protecting and Managing the Commonwealth's Fishery and Wildlife Resources and he was proud to have received a Lifetime Achievement award from the Berkshire County League of Sportsman. He also worked as a Massachusetts Law Enforcement officer and was often part of the articles in the Berkshire Eagle's Ted Giddings column.
After retiring at the age of 72 he decided to take up karate. He studied Okinawa Karate at ZenQuest Martial Arts, where he achieved 4th degree black belt at the age of 84.
The family would like to thank all of the nurses and nurses' aides at Mount Greylock Extended Care Facility for their exceptional care and compassion they provided to Leo and the family during this time.
Services will be held privately for the family. When it is safer to gather, there will be a celebration of Leo's life. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made payable to "Hospice Care of Western MA" and mailed to the Devanny-Condron Funeral Home at 40 Maplewood Ave. Pittsfield, MA 01201
