At an early age, Leland accepted Christ and was baptized at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church in Monroe, Louisiana. His early schooling began in the Ouachita Parish School District of Monroe, LA at Carver Elementary School. In the 3rd grade, Leland was crowned King of Carver Elementary School. He relocated to Little Rock, Arkansas in 1967 with his family and continued his education at Dunbar Junior High School, and became a graduate of Horace Mann High School.

After his retirement, Leland returned to his hometown of Little Rock, Arkansas and became a member of Liberty Hill Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. Fredrick Haynes. At Liberty Hill, Leland volunteered his time to help maintain the property of the church. Throughout his retirement, he spent time with his family, enjoying family functions and doting on his grandchildren.
Leland had a love of bowling, music and was an avid car enthusiast. As a child growing up, he was known to bake pies to satisfy his sweet tooth which lasted throughout his adult life. He always had a supply of chocolates and candy stashed somewhere. Leland had a smile that would brighten up any room and he never met a stranger.
