Lee Johnson, age 86, New Franklin, died at her home on Tuesday, December 11, 2018. Born in Akron, Ohio to Charles Jay Stansberry and Winifred Hope (Bines) Stansberry, Lee was preceded in death by her parents; husband of forty-eight years, Norman Lee Johnson; special friend, Tony Hoffman; her stepfather, Karl J. Priester; and her beloved grandparents, Henry O. (Philena "Lena"nee Rollins,) Stansberry and William H. (Flora nee Smith) Bines II.
Lee was an ardent gardener from the age of five and was still gardening this past summer. Lee was an omnivorous reader, a pleasure that was taken away from her by macular degeneration. She read Gone with the Wind at the age of ten in one sitting. Lee was an avid hiker, always happy to be in outdoors. In her seventies, she began hiking the Appalachian Trail in sections over a period of four years where she was known as "Buckeye Lee." She was very proud that she was able to make it to the top of Mount Katahdin to complete her journey. Lee also enjoyed photography and oil painting. Despite hating needles, she gave 123 pints of O-positive blood. A high school dropout, she went on to earn her bachelor's degree in education and graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Akron.
Surviving Lee is her step-sister, Nancy Wilson; her sisters-of-the-heart, Sally Clawson and Jan Kuhn; her sons, Eric (Ron Elliott), Jay (Dawn), Craig, Russell (Katie), and Kurt (Lisa); grandchildren, Kimberly, Katherine (Tiffani Robinson), Karl, Kassandra, Kristine, Alyssa, Victor, and Amber; cousins, Hannah Jo Mays, Judy (Michael) Marino, and Martin Stout.
Calling hours followed by a memorial service will be begin at 11:00 am, Saturday, January 5, 2019, at Manchester United Methodist Church, 5625 Manchester Road, New Franklin, Ohio. Instead of flowers, a donation may be made to the church.
