Lea Paxton Nixon, age 86, of Atlanta died on July 28, 2018 after a valiant struggle with Parkinson's disease. Lea was the daughter of W. Norris Paxton and Caroline H. Paxton. She was born in Kansas City, MO grew up in Albany, NY and attended Cornell University, where she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority and was active in Pan-Hellenic activities. She remained very connected to Cornell and was a lifetime member of the Cornell Council, was awarded the Helen Bull Vandervort Outstanding Human Ecology Alumni Award as well as the Frank H.T. Rhodes Exemplary Alumni Service Award, and was designated a Foremost Benefactor of Cornell. Upon graduation, she worked in Boston for a few years before moving to New York City, where she found her dream job as Fashion and Publicity Coordinator for Supima Cotton. There she also met and married her beloved husband of 60 years, John Nixon. They lived in several cities in the United States as well as Japan and several other countries. She enjoyed traveling and visited over 100 countries. Lea was a very active volunteer with the American Cancer Society, the Assistance League of Atlanta and the Georgia Council of International Visitors. She also was a docent at the Atlanta Botanical Garden and the Georgia Aquarium. She was a member of Tomadachi, the International Club of Atlanta and several other international clubs. Lea felt that the most important thing she did, other than raising her family, was to bring a two year old boy from the Republic of Georgia, who had been born with a hole in his heart and given six months to live, to Atlanta and arrange for Children's Healthcare of Atlanta to repair his heart, so that he could live a normal life. She remained Tedi's Atlanta grandma for the rest of her life. She is survived by her husband, John, her daughter, Diana Nixon, of Alameda, CA, her son, Jeffrey Nixon, daughter-in-law, Lisa Nixon, and granddaughter. Lauren Nixon, of Bellaire, TX, and her grandson, Lafa Taylor of Los Angeles, CA. A memorial service will be held at Trinity Presbyterian Church 3003 Howell Mill Rd NW, Atlanta, GA 30327 on August 3, 2018 at 11:00am. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that all memorials be sent to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta Foundation, 3395 NE Expressway, Suite 100, Atlanta, GA 30341.
