Lawrence A. Mallat 90, of Keene, NH, passed away on January 6, 2025, at the Langdon Place of Keene.
His parents, Robert L. and Margaret (Sweeney) Mallat welcomed their son into the world on May 9, 1934, in Keene, NH. He grew up in Keene, attending St. Joseph Regional School and was a 1952 graduate of Keene High School where he was the freshman class president and junior class treasurer, a member of the National Honor Society, and a delegate to Boys State.
In 1979, Lawrence received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration from Franklin Pierce College.
Lawrence enlisted in the US Navy in 1952. He initially trained as a hospital corpsman. During his twenty-year career with the Navy, he received advanced training in field medicine, communicable diseases diagnosis and treatment while serving when no doctor was assigned, at naval dispensaries and hospitals.
His sea duty assignments were primarily with the US Marine Fleet Maine Force with assignments in Japan, Okinawa and South Vietnam. During the Tet Offensive of 1968, he was the administrative chief of a combat dispensary at Chu Lai, South Vietnam. For actions taken by him during this offensive, he was awarded the US Navy Commendation Medal with Combat "V".
His remaining military honors received were the Combat Ribbon, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Good Conduct Medal (5th award), National Defense Medal (2nd award), Vietnam Service Medal with three bronze stars and Fleet Marine Force Combat Device, Vietnam Campaign Medal, South Vietnam Meritorious Medal, Expert Rifle Ribbon, Expert Pistol Ribbon, and the Consecutive Wartime Veterans Service Medal.
Lawrence retired from the Navy in June of 1972 as a Senior Chief Petty Officer. He was a lifetime member of the VFW Post 1631 in Concord, NH.
Following his military obligation, Lawrence resided in Bow, NH, working in management and claims for NH/VT Blue Cross in Concord. He later was Director of Patient Accounts at Southern NH Medical Center in Nashua, NH. He was a member of the American Guild of Patient Account Managers
Following his retirement in 1990, he and his wife Joan resided in New Port Richey, Florida until returning to Keene in 1998. In 2003, they moved to Waterbury, Connecticut where he resided for several years, returning to Keene in 2016.
He is survived by his son, Stephen Mallat of West Lebanon, ME, Robert F. "Bob" Mallat of Pembroke, NH; a daughter, Ann Tomao and her husband, Joseph, of Manchester, NH; his grandchildren, Erin, Megan, Ashley Cotte, Shana Mallat, Marissa Tomao, Christina Tomao, Ben McCabe, Steven McCabe; and many nieces, nephews and extended family members.
His wife of 54 years, Joan (Smythe) Mallat died on September 2, 2012. He was predeceased by a daughter, Michelle McCabe in 2016; a daughter-in-law, Kathy Mallat; two brothers, Robert Mallat and Richard Mallat; and a sister, Margaret "Peggy" Lynch.
A graveside service with military honors will be held on Wednesday, January 15, 2025, at 11:30am in the Monadnock View Cemetery, Park Avenue, Keene, NH. All are welcome to attend. There are no public calling hours.
