Laura Suber?a loving mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend---went to be with her Lord on Saturday, July 13, 2024. She was born on March 19,1932, in Clarksville, Tennessee and moved to Nashville at an early age. She was a member of Kappa Delta Sorority and graduated from Vanderbilt University in 1954 with a BA degree in History. After graduation, she worked in Nashville as a social worker, then moved to Washington D.C. where she worked for the Department of the Navy, and then she worked for American Airlines as a stewardess (they were not called flight attendants in those days). After marrying, she lived in numerous places including Ft. Worth, Midland, Odessa, Granbury, Richardson, Houston, Garland, and Van.
After staying home to raise children, Laura went back to work as a real estate agent and later worked in the oilfield business. She then made a career change by going into social work, first for Van Zandt County and then in the home health industry. From there, her adventurous spirit led to additional training, and she received her credentials to work in the nursing home business in administration. She served as the administrator of several nursing homes in Hamburg, Arkansas, Arlington, Garland, and finally, Van Texas. She is remembered locally as the administrator of Van Healthcare nursing home for many years and she retired in 2007.
Laura was a very active and involved mom. She rarely missed a horse or livestock show, and attended every tennis, band, cheerleading, FFA, and college activity and event possible. She was a dedicated Vandal Band Parent and spent many Friday nights working the concession stand at the football games. She was a co-founder of the Van 4-H Horse club in the early 1970's, and she traveled many miles pulling a horse trailer to ensure her children were able to attend horse shows across the state of Texas. She had an adventurous spirit, loved to laugh, and she always enjoyed any social get-together. She especially enjoyed her Friday night card games with the "Lollies". She was known as an amazing story-teller and was always quick with a witty response. She was a member of the Van United Methodist Church and enjoyed being in the choir and helping with Angel Tree. She was active in the City of Van and served on committees. She was also a proud member of the Van Fine Arts Club where she served a term as president. She loved her numerous fur babies over the years, most recently, her little Bailey.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Allen and Mattie Brown; brothers, Dunlop Brown and Allen Brown (Joby); her husband, Louis Suber; her previous husband, Gil Carafiol; the father of her children, Freeman Gross; and a niece, Ginger Snider.
Laura is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Marty and Len Moore of Van; son and daughter-in-law, Trey and Dana Gross of Tyler; two granddaughters, Megan Moore and Macy Moore; and ten nieces and nephews, Joe (Sally) Brown, Laura (Steve) Cobb, Debbie (Johnny) Kopple, Allen Brown, Brad (Susan) Brown, Dunlop (Sandy) Brown, Sandy Jones, Al Reyes, Carol (James) Hicks, and Mary Lou Lubbers. She is also survived by many great-nieces and great-nephews, and her dear friend of 50 years, Mary Golden.
The family would like to extend a very special and heartfelt thank you to the loving staff of Van Healthcare nursing home. Thank you for making our precious Laura feel so loved during her time there. You all didn't treat her like she was just a resident, you all treated her like she was family. Also, our deepest thanks and appreciation to Enhabit Home Health & Hospice for all of your love and dedication. For those who would like to give but in lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Van ISD Education Foundation: https://www.vanisdfoundation.com.
