Larry David Thompson, age,76, of Garden City, SC & formerly of Gastonia, NC; passed away peacefully with his wife, Denise, by his side on Sunday March 30, 2025. He was born on December 4, 1948 in Great Lakes, Illinois to the late Clarence Carlisle and Velma Sorenson Thompson.
Along with his parents, Larry is reunited in passing with his brother, Jim Thompson.
Larry proudly served our country in the United States Navy. He was a man best remembered for his actions rather than his words. If there was ever anyone in need, he was there. Even when you didn't ask, it was done. When he did speak, everyone listened because you could be assured it was either going to be a well thought out opinion/suggestion or just an off the wall joke to make you laugh. In his spare time, he enjoyed volunteering at Brookgreen Gardens where he was a proud 9-year "Handy Vol" Volunteer. In addition, to those that knew him, he also enjoyed satisfying his insatiable need to go to the grocery store... or two (probably three) and could always tell you where to get the best deals. He enjoyed fishing, woodworking, fixing things, cooking, spending time with friends and family and spoiling his grandchildren. He will be remembered with love, laughter and friendship.
Left to cherish Larry's memory are his adoring wife, Denise Yarborough Thompson of Garden City SC; son, Brandon Thompson and wife Natalie, of Pawleys Island, SC, son, David Thompson of Mooresville, NC & daughter, Alice Thompson Smiley of Fairbanks, Alaska; grandchildren, Ariel Peterson, Angel Millington, Meris Thompson, Reese Thompson and Aria Thompson; four great grandchildren; brother, Robert "Bobby" and wife Susan of Mooresville, NC; sister in-law, Anne Thompson of Dunn, NC; as well as numerous nieces and nephews; a large, loving, extended family and many supportive friends and neighbors.
