Larry Elliott Smith, originally from Laurinburg, 78, passed away August 9, 2021 at his home in Matthews, NC. He was a devoted father and friend to all those that knew him. A memorial service will be held September 11, 2021 at 2:00pm at McCormick Cemetery, 13100 Blues Farm Rd., Laurinburg, NC. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Larry's Life. Born March 9, 1943 in Scotland County, he was a son of the late James B. and Bertha McCormick Smith. Larry loved Laurinburg and spent many days riding horses, including his favorite horse, Rebel. He proudly served with the US Army in Vietnam and was a member of the American Legion. Larry graduated from Pembroke University in 1971 and had a long and successful career in the carpet industry. He was skilled with numbers and negotiations but most of all, skilled with people. He lived life with enthusiasm, courage, and authentic style. He loved spending time at the beach, shagging, and listening to beach music. Larry was always quick with a joke and people loved to be around him because they knew they would be laughing. His charm and sense of humor made every occasion special. Though we will miss his smile and laughter, and hearing his tall tales one more time, Larry is now in the loving and healing arms of the Lord. He will be missed by many. He is survived by his daughters, Jennifer Marze (Joe) of Matthews, NC, Karla Cook (David) of Walnut Creek, CA; four grandsons, Jaxson and Jonah Marze, Benjamin and Brady Cook; brothers, Marshall Smith (Patti) of Laurinburg and Maxie Smith of Blenheim, SC; two sisters, Linda Lawrence (Jackie) of Laurinburg and Betty Smith of Laurinburg; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Catherine Hammock, Shirley Kottyan, and Frances Robinson; and brother, James Boyd "Cow Chain" Smith Jr. In lieu of flowers, please honor Larry's memory with a random act of kindness to someone in need or a charity of one's choice.
