Larry Tilghman Kuhns, 77, of Bridgeport, W. Va., passed away at home surrounded by his family on January 4, 2023.
He was the son of the late Martin Kuhns and Hattie Schraden Kuhns of Kuhnsville. Born on June 29, 1945 in Allentown, Larry grew up on his family's farm. He graduated from Parkland High School in 1963 and was a meat cutter for 40 years before retiring from ShopRite in 2012. He was a handyman, having built two of his family's homes before moving to Fort Pierce, Fla., where he resided for 20 years. He relocated to West Virginia in 2019. It was here where he became "Poppy" to those who knew him best. Larry had three siblings - sister Carol and husband Harold Rex (niece Roxie), brother Gerald and wife Carol (nieces Sheila and Tammy, nephew Mike), and brother Martin and wife Laead (Doi) (niece Patty). He leaves behind his beloved son, Scott and wife Brenda, and his daughter and caretaker for the last 4 years, Vickie. He was so proud of his grandchildren: Kasha Gawthrop and husband Brian, Alexander Kuhns and fianc? Alexandra Achim, and Leah Fetty and husband Andrew. His great grandchildren Easton, Ellie, and Arrow were his pride and joy. He was a 40-year member of Independent Order of Odd Fellows Jordan Lodge No. 192 Inc., belonged to the Bowman Park Camp in Bowmanstown, and attended Coons Run Baptist Church in Shinnston, WV. Larry was an energetic, fast-paced, quick talker who was always eager to chat to any friend or stranger about his family, his experiences, or his fishing stories. He loved to escape in music, find joy in cooking, and make memories with large family dinners that were always followed by a long night of card games. He was at his happiest by the water, whether that be swimming in the ocean or piloting his boat "Lady K" along Florida's Indian River. Poppy spent his final four years catching catfish from a small wooden dock on the banks of Maple Lake, often grabbing naps on an old bench under a willow tree, his fishing hat pulled down tight to shade his eyes. Honoring Larry's wishes there will not be a viewing or funeral service. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date. Davis Funeral Home and Onsite Crematory is handling the cremation and honored to serve the Kuhns family. Online condolences can be made at www.davisfuneralhomewv.com.
