Lane B Sommer, 59, passed away comfortably and peacefully on January 14, 2025, at the Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center in Idaho Falls, Idaho, surrounded by nearly 30 of his family members.
Lane was born to Reed and Marie Sommer on December 15, 1965, in Rexburg, Idaho. He was the youngest of four children and lived most of his life in Hibbard, Idaho, close to many family members and his parents. He attended Madison High School, graduating in 1984. During his youth, Lane developed a deep love for adventure and the outdoors, enjoying camping, fishing, snow skiing, water skiing, photography, driving fast cars, and pulling pranks with his buddies.
Lane earned an Associate's Degree from Ricks College and later earned a Bachelor's Degree in Sociology from the University of Utah in 1993. His career was marked by dedication and serving others. He began with home painting and scuba-based construction before transitioning to the telecommunications industry, where he owned and operated his companies. After serving as a juvenile probation officer, he spent thirteen years directing Broulim's grocery stores. In 2021, he began working at Homestead Assisted Living. As the Director of Health and Hospice, his compassionate leadership positively impacted the lives of many.
Lane's dedication to his faith and community was evident in his lifelong membership in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He contributed to many wards, serving in various teaching and leadership positions, including the Young Men's organization, Elders Quorum, and as an Executive Secretary for multiple bishoprics.
Lane married Sheila Edelmayer on August 22, 1985, and they had six children?five sons and one daughter. He found joy in sharing his love for adventure with his family and created cherished memories through outdoor activities, including camping trips, hunting, boating, water skiing, and floating the Snake River. After their divorce in 2023, Lane continued to maintain strong relationships with his children and remained dedicated to his family. All of his children are now married, and at the time of his passing, he had ten grandchildren with another on the way. He was proud to be a grandfather and was affectionately known as "Papa." Lane loved spending time with his family and was ever present in their lives.
In 2024, Lane met Shauna Sweat Hemsley of Idaho Falls, Idaho. Their connection was immediate, forming a deep bond of friendship that blossomed into love?they had both found the person they wanted to spend the rest of their life with. As was his way, Lane embraced Shauna's children and grandchildren as his own, forming meaningful relationships in a short amount of time. Lane and Shauna were married on September 27, 2024, in Rexburg, Idaho and began their new chapter with a honeymoon in Hawaii. Lane optimistically embraced the new adventures that he and Shauna would share together.
Unfortunately, Lane's plans for his life and family were tragically cut short four days before his passing after being involved in an ATV accident. He is survived by his wife Shauna Sommer, mother Marie Sommer, brother Steven Sommer, sisters, Laurel (Jay) Robinson and Marcene (Don) Blunck, his children; Tyler (Laura) Sommer, Mitchell (Analyn) Sommer, Derek (McKinley) Sommer, Kyle (Leah) Sommer, daughter Ashten (Kovi) Riding, son Traegan (Kyleigh) Sommer, stepchildren; Justin (Suzi) Hemsley, Ryan (Tana) Hemsley, Brandon (Melissa) Hemsley, Crystal Murri, Brittney Peterson, 10 grandchildren (and counting), and 10 step grandchildren (and counting).
He is preceded in death by his father, Reed Sommer, who passed away May 6, 2023.
The family would like to extend a special, heartfelt thank you to the providers and staff in the ICU at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center in Idaho Falls, Idaho for the intensive and compassionate care they provided in Lane's final days. Lane's approach to life was exuberant and warm. He was quick to laugh, offer a hug, and agree to an adventure. His family will miss his enthusiastic and full presence in their lives, but intend to carry their lives forward in a similar manner, anticipating a joyful reunion in the eternities.
The family will visit with friends at Flamm Funeral Home, 61 N 1st E, Rexburg, ID on Sunday, January 19, 2025, 5:00-8:00 p.m. and 10:00 a.m. on Monday at the church prior to the services.
Funeral services will be Monday, January 20, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at the old Hibbard Church Building, 2001 N 3000 W, Rexburg, Idaho with Bishop Joshua Anderson officiating. Interment will be at the Rexburg Cemetery, 350 W Moran View Rd, Rexburg, ID.
