Leonard Howard Pollard, 74, passed away with his family by his side on June 5, 2022 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Howard was born July 21, 1947 in Logan, Utah to Leonard Heber and Dorothy Rubel Pollard. He married Sybil Lawless on November 26, 1976 in the Ogden, Utah LDS temple.
Howard received his B.S. and M.S. in electrical engineering from Utah State University and his Ph.D. in electrical engineering from the University of Illinois - Champaign Urbana. A dedicated educator, Professor Pollard taught computer engineering at the University of New Mexico (UNM) for 34 years, including classes in all aspects of computer design, computer and microprocessor architecture, and hardware implementation. Along with his colleague, Dr. Ramiro Jord?n, Dr. Pollard organized the Ibero-American Science and Technology Education Consortium (ISTEC), which brings together academic, industrial, and government organizations and foundations to develop educational programs, initiates international research and development efforts, and provides a vehicle for technology transfer for universities in Spain, Portugal, Central and South America. Dr. Pollard also led courses and discussions in both English and Spanish at the Universidad de Vigo (UVI) and throughout Spain, Columbia, Brazil, Puerto Rico, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Argentina. In addition, he taught courses centered on microcontrollers, microprocessors and DSP systems in Indonesia, Philippines, and Poland. He wrote two textbooks (Computer Design and Architecture and The Design Book: Techniques and Solutions for Digital Computer Systems), co-authored 33 other publications, and was named professor emeritus in 2017 following his retirement from UNM.
Howard was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, serving his mission in the West Spanish American Mission, which included California, Arizona and Nevada. He served as a temple worker at the Albuquerque, New Mexico temple and found joy in his service to his church community.
Howard is survived by his wife of 45 years, daughters Ashley Pollard and Lauren Lecocq (Dan), sisters Marilyn Griffin (Clair) and Joyce Campbell, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Lorin. Memorial Service and Interment will be held June 22, 2022 at 11am in the Logan City Cemetery, Logan, Utah.
