L.D. Truitt, 88, of Canyon, passed away at his home on Sunday February 6, 2022. Graveside services will be 10:00 AM Thursday February 10, 2022 at Dreamland Cemetery in Canyon with Pastor Kevin Deckard officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday from 5:00 - 7:00 PM. Arrangements are under the direction of Cox-Rowley Funeral Home. LD Truitt was born on November 4, 1933 to Hill and Opal Truitt in Keota Oklahoma. LD and his family later moved to Chowchilla, California. LD graduated from Chowchilla High School in 1953. Shortly thereafter he was drafted into the United States Army. Upon completion of Basic camp at Fort Ord, California LD was selected to attend Field Artillery Officer Candidate school at Fort Sill, Oklahoma and graduated as a Second Lieutenant in August of 1954 at age 19. During his career in the Army LD was assigned to different Army installations in the United States and was part of several different combat units including the 82nd Airborne and the 101st Airborne. Overseas tours included Korea and combat action in Vietnam. He was a decorated veteran. Awards include the National Defense Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Parachute Badge, Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, the Army Commendation Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster and the Bronze Star. After retiring from the Army as a Lieutenant Colonel he worked for Texas State Technical College for 22 years. In retirement he enjoyed gardening, woodworking and time with his wife, children and grandchildren. L.D. was preceded in death by his parents, Hill and Opal Truitt; two brothers, Carrol Truitt and Kenneth Truitt. Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Mary Cecile Truitt; two sons, Michael Truitt and wife Shery of Canyon and Scott Truitt and wife Emily of Pearl River, Louisiana; one sister, Betty Roulston of Medera, California; three grandsons, Michael Truitt, Alexander.
