Kvet Strakes, 82, City Citizen of the Year

Kvet Strakes, former head of Armco Steel's payroll department and a community volunteer, died of Alzheimer's disease May 8 in Naples, Fla. She was 82 and had lived in Towson.
Born Kvet Beaujorkova in Czechoslovakia, she immigrated to the United States in 1952 after her husband was killed in World War II.
She took a job with Armco Steel in Baltimore, where she became head of the payroll department. She resigned from Armco when she married George Strakes in 1963 and took a job at his company, Strakes Advertising.
Mrs. Strakes volunteered at the Baltimore Museum of Art and at retirement homes. The city of Baltimore recognized her service with a Citizen of the Year award.
She and her husband retired in 1992 and moved from Towson to Naples, Fla. There Mrs. Strakes founded the Pelican Bay Women's League.
She was a gourmet cook who enjoyed art, tennis and mah-jongg.
Services will be at 11 a.m. tomorrow at St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church in Naples, Fla.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Margit Hiatt of Seattle; a stepson, James Christ Cohen of Odenton; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
