On Friday, January 8, 2021, Kenneth Smith, loving husband, father, and grandfather, passed away at the age of 73.
Ken was born on August 15, 1947 in Aberdeen, SD to Gerald and Ramona Smith. He grew up in Aberdeen and enlisted in the Army after graduating Central High School in 1965. Ken served as a Sergeant in Army security in Vietnam, where he defended the American Embassy during the Tet Offensive in Saigon in 1968. Ken was very proud that in each of his four years of service, he was able to get home to South Dakota to share Christmas with family and friends.
On his Christmas visit in 1968, he met his future wife Charlotte Wicks who was working as a nurse in a hospital. Married August 22, 1969, they returned to Virginia where Ken completed his last year of service at an Army security post outside of Washington, D.C.
Ken attended Northern State University and graduated in 1973 with a double major and a double minor. Medical sales became his livelihood for over 30 years. His professional achievements and sales excellence afforded Ken and Char numerous trips to Europe and a trip to Super Bowl XIII.
He raised two amazing daughters, Nicholle and Michelle, to be Minnesota Vikings fans. Unwavering in his support, Ken always believed in his football team. He enjoyed golf, tennis, cards, and loved putting on a great fireworks show on the 4th of July. Ken loved his schnauzer buddies Max, Barnaby, Oliver, and Cooper.
Ken was grateful to share 51 years of marriage with Char surrounded by their loving daughters Nicholle (Anthony) Rijken and granddaughter Gabrielle of Parker, TX; Michelle (Brady) McWhorter and grandson Collin of Sachse, TX; sisters and brothers, Barb (Neil Peters) Dahme of Britton, SD, Steve Smith of Hollywood, CA, Jeri Smith of Lake City, SD, Mitch (Gloria Robideaux) Smith of Yankton, SD, and Lynn (Randy) Carlson of Britton, SD; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Welcoming Ken home with a smile are his parents and brother, Doug Smith.
