Kenneth (Ken) Bechtel was born in Mechanicsville, Iowa. He moved to Mount Vernon as a young boy and grew up in the community of Big Lake. He graduated from Sedro-Woolley High School and served his country in the US Navy. Ken then returned to Skagit County and worked for Skagit County Engineers as a surveyor for more than 30 years. Ken knew the county like the back of his hand, and he surveyed many of the county roads we travel on today. He was an active and involved member of the Mount Vernon Church of the Nazarene participating in Bible study and Sunday worship. An avid hunter and outdoorsman, Ken went on many expeditions throughout the Northwestern United States and Western Canada. Ken could wow you with his hunting stories and adventures. He enjoyed traveling and cruising to Alaska, The Caribbean and Europe. Recently, Ken enjoyed taking long walks with his faithful dog Ruby along the Skagit River dike system. Ken loved to play cards and was an expert cribbage player. He could look at your cribbage hand and in a second tell you how many points you had. He enjoyed classic cars and driving around the county in his 1955 Chevrolet. He was known for his work ethic, and would not let anyone outwork him. He is preceded in death by his mother Dorothy Vanscoy, father Kenneth Bechtel, sister Sharon Bechtel, brother OV Bechtel and wife Jacqueline Cook.
