Kathryn Nell Chapman, 81, went to be with our Lord on April 4, 2024 with her daughters by her side.
Kathryn was born November 14, 1942, in Alvord, TX to William and Agnes Barker. The family settled in Fruitland, TX where she rode the bus to attend school in Bowie. It was never a dull moment with 4 siblings, they worked hard on chores, schoolwork and would continue to bring their families to their family home for many holidays until their parents passed away. She joined the First Methodist Church March 29,1953 on Easter Sunday. A fond memory is their daddy would give them each a nickel to put in the offering plate each Sunday. She was raised in the church and loved her Lord dearly until the day she passed. One of her first jobs was working at a fruit stand near her home and after graduation she worked at Haggar Slacks factory with her sister Carolyn.
Kathryn loved her family and was blessed to be able to stay home and raise her two daughters for many years. She was so proud of her home in Odessa, she filled it with treasures from shopping trips with her sisters Frances and Harriet. She loved working in the yard, she planted many trees and beautiful flowers that she waited with anticipation to bloom each year. Her backyard was like an oasis, and she had numerous turtles that she looked forward to feeding daily.
After her daughters were older, she went to work at Highland United Methodist Church as the secretary for 29 years. She loved her church, and it was more like a second home. After retirement she continued to volunteer, visiting/delivering meals and being a dear friend to so many. She loved sending cards for any occasion but especially when someone needed words of encouragement or to let them know she was thinking of them. She loved receiving cards as well.
One of her proudest moments was receiving a medal and certificate of achievement from Joslin Diabetes Center for living courageously with diabetes for 50 years, how amazing that she exceeded that by 15 more years! The last year of her life she lived with her daughters in El Paso and Carlsbad, she was an early riser and would greet each family member with a huge hug, weather update and reminder of her love and a grateful heart. She handled every change with dignity and grace.
Her greatest joy and source of pride were her daughters, Karen and Kim. And later, her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She cherished every moment with them. She also loved the fur-babies Steve, Zoe and Fergie.
She is preceded in death by her parents, William and Agnes Barker, brothers Charles Barker, Alvin Barker, Richard Barker, sisters Frances Cooke and Carolyn Johnson, brother in-law Bobby McGee and sister in-law Jerry Barker.
