GORDON Joann Jones Sublett, 80, died peacefully on August 4, 2021. Born May 12, 1941 in Mineral Wells, she was the only child of Ralph and Sallie Jones.
Joann was a precocious child who never lacked companionship. She was raised and attended school in Gordon and was valedictorian of her class. She was involved in many school activities, including basketball and student government. She met the love her life, Pat, while in high school.
After graduation, Joann obtained an associate's degree. She became engaged to Pat, who was then in the Army, and married after his release in 1960. Pat and Joann lived briefly in Ft. Worth and Roswell before settling in California. While in California, Joann was blessed by the births of two girls, Jill and Karen. While Pat worked for Pacific Bell, Joann managed the household.
Desiring to be closer to family, Pat and Joann moved back to Gordon where they became founding members of the Gordon Church of Christ. Joann was an active member of the church until her death. For decades she typed and duplicated the church bulletin, taught Bible classes, and was involved in every church event.
Pat and Joann purchased a small building that had been Tanner's Hardware in 1970. Pat continued his career in telephony while Joann became the town hardware woman, working six days a week, often alone. Joann did everything from threading pipe to providing advice on the right tool to use for an electrical project. She managed the store for more than thirty years.
Joann was a gracious and beautiful woman who had remarkable energy and skill to balance church, family, and work. As her health declined, she continued to be grateful for her blessings. Nothing made Joann happier than to be surrounded by her children and grandchildren. She particularly looked forward to Thanksgiving, when everyone gathered for the annual family photo. It is not surprising that the last clear words Joann said were "thank you."
Joann was predeceased by her parents. She is survived by daughter Jill Coan and husband Steve of Colleyville; daughter Karen Mitchell and husband William of Irving; grandchildren Christopher Coan and wife Melanie; Grace, Benjamin, Joshua, and Caleb Coan; Will, David, Katherine, and Lauren Mitchell; and a host of special nieces, nephews, cousins, and church family.
A celebration of life will be held at Gordon Church of Christ, 608 E. Elm Street in Gordon, TX August 21 at 1 p.m.
