Kathleen Sample Long, 96, passed away Friday, June 28, 2024 at Saluda Nursing Center surrounded by her family.
Kathleen (better known as Mema) was born July 8, 1927 in Silverstreet, South Carolina. She was the daughter of the late Bennie Mayer and Doshia Mae Smith Sample. She was the wife of the late Charles Evans Long. She retired from Saluda Shirt Company to keep her grandchildren and some of their friends. She loved watching all sports, especially her grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She was an avid Clemson Tigers and Atlanta Braves fan. Mema loved cooking, playing Bingo, Shopping, always providing gifts for all people. Most of all she loved spending time with her family.
Surviving are daughters, Kathy Bethea (Frank) of Saluda and Charlene Pitts (Billy) of Prosperity, grandchildren, Katy Bethea (Jason Hughey) of Piedmont, Gib Bethea (Fiona) of Atlanta, and Evan Pitts (Rebecca) of Pomaria, great-grandchildren, Jude Pitts and Silas Pitts, Mairead, Seamus, and Eilis Bethea and Owen Hughey. She is also survived by brothers, Charlton Sample (Sue) and James Guy Sample (Janet).
Mrs. Long was preceded in death by a brother, Bennie Ray Sample and a sister, Annette Bouknight.
The family would like to thank Dr. Bill Sawyer and Dr. Dan Bouknight and Nurse Practitioner Leanna Owings. The family wishes to thank the staff and Saluda Nursing Center for their loving care of Mema these last three years.
The family will receive friends from 4 until 6 p.m., Sunday at Ramey Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m., Monday, July 1, 2024 at Shiloh Methodist Church with Rev. Bob Huggins officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
