Ida Kathleen Barker Evans, 96, wife of the late Willard Dye (W.D.) Evans, passed away peacefully at home on March 21, 2023. She was born on January 30, 1927 in Lumberton, NC to Prentice Reid Barker, Sr. and Ida Thelma Britt Barker. Kathleen is survived by her son, David Barker Evans, and his wife, Stephanie.
Also surviving are her beloved grandchildren, David Hunter (Alex) Evans and Hanna Kathleen Evans (Hugh) McCutchen and their children, Benjamin David Evans, and John Harris McCutchen, who provide much love and laughter.
Kathleen is also survived by a host of family and friends who will treasure her memory. In addition to her husband and parents, Kathleen was predeceased by her first son, Willard Dye "Dee" Evans, Jr.; her sister, Helen Reid Barker Kellahan; and five brothers, Pitman Warwick Barker, John Alexander Barker, Ernest Knox Barker, Horace Russell Barker, and Prentice Reid Barker, Jr.
Kathleen grew up in Lumberton, NC on a tobacco and dairy farm and was an avid horsewoman. Following her graduation from Lumberton High School, she attended Coker College, SC. Kathleen transferred to East Carolina University, NC and graduated with a B.S. in business. After teaching bookkeeping in Dunn, NC, Kathleen moved to Kingstree, SC and married W.D. in 1954. They remained happily married for 60 years.
Kathleen also employed her business skills at Winslow Chevrolet and for the Superintendent of Education, Williamsburg County, SC. She was instrumental in the founding of Williamsburg Academy where she taught typing and bookkeeping. One of her greatest joys was to serve as secretary/bookkeeper for W.D. Evans and Son for 30 years. Kathleen was a charter member of the Kingstree Presbyterian Church and was an active, devoted member. She served as the treasurer for the Women in the Church for 30 years.
Kathleen shared her musical talent by playing piano for the early service at Bethel Presbyterian Church for 6 years. She greatly enjoyed time with family, cross stitching, playing bridge with friends, and wonderful excursions to the beach.
The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to all in the community who reached out in various ways. Special thanks are offered to Delores McFadden, Suzanne Arnau, Dana
Williams and Amedisys Hospice staff. The family will receive friends from 5-7 on Saturday March 25, 2023, at Kingstree Presbyterian Church.
The funeral service will be 2 P.M. Sunday, March 26, 2023, at Kingstree Presbyterian Church with burial to follow at Kingstree Memorial Gardens.
