Karlene Bratsman McFarland, age 89, passed away peacefully in her home on October 13, 2024 surrounded by her loved ones.
Karlene was born to John Bratsman and Verla Ward on January 6, 1935 in Rexburg Idaho at her Grandma and Grandpa Wards house. She was the oldest of 6 children. She had 2 brothers and 3 sisters.
She grew up in Parker Idaho. She lived with her parents in one room of her Grandma and Grandpa Schuldies house. As a young girl she enjoyed playing with her siblings in the pasture and the river bottoms. They enjoyed fishing, picnics, and hot dog roasts at the sand hills. As a teen Karlene loved reading, and would often venture outside to sit in a tree to read her beloved books, this started her love for reading that continued throughout the rest of her life.
She attended grade school at Parker Elementary and later graduated from South Fremont High School in St. Anthony. She played the steel guitar at funerals and other functions. She enjoyed playing softball, riding horses, playing with cousins and taking care of her younger siblings.
Karlene worked in West Yellowstone at the hotels and later on she worked at the drug store in St. Anthony. When she was in Junior High she met an older guy by the name of Dean McFarland. They began dating and the rest is history.
Dean and Karlene were married in the Idaho Falls Temple on March 11, 1954. They moved to the Twin Falls area where they had their first child, Margo. Then sons, Darris and Kirby followed. They later moved to the Salem area where sons Justin and Jaren joined the family.
Karlene loved her family, they were everything to her. She loved to cook for them, and boy could that lady cook! She always looked forward to family gatherings. She loved the holidays because she knew that it would bring all her family together.
Karlene enjoyed painting, quilting and gardening. Her yard and garden were her treasures. She made numerous quilts for her family and all the babies.
As a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Karlene quietly served in many callings throughout the years.
