Karen Collins Johnson, age 67, passed away Wednesday, February 10, 2021, at her residence in Watkinsville.
Karen loved gardening, reading and her pets, but most of all, the people in her life.
Karen was born and raised in Smyrna, Georgia, graduating from Wills High School. She attended the University of North Georgia in Dahlonega before transferring to the University of Georgia until graduation in 1975. She was employed by the Federal Reserve of Atlanta as a consumer affairs examiner. She went from there to attend Life Chiropractic College (Life University) of Marietta, Georgia, achieving her Doctor of Chiropractic degree in 1984. After a time in private practice, she expanded her career to include teaching radiology at Life University, journalism and reporting, freelance writing and editing for several publications, medical transcription and teaching medical terminology, research for the Association of Healthcare Documentation Integrity and later as an assistant editor for a science journal at the University of Georgia until her retirement in 2012.
She was a member of Saint Stephen's Anglican Catholic Church in Athens and had recently been attending The Episcopal Church of the Redeemer in Greensboro.
Karen was preceded in death by her grandmother, Marjorie Hiatt Collins; mother, Lois Dewrell; sister, Brandi; and brother, Ben Dewrell.
Mrs. Johnson is survived by her husband, Alan Johnson of Watkinsville; brothers, Bill Dewrell (Genella), David Dewrell and Dan Dewrell.
A celebration for Karen's life will be held at a later date.
Memorial contributions can be made in her name to the Salvation Army.
