Julie Roseberry died May 16, 2022, at the age of 92. Fredericksburg had been her home since 1978. She had been encouraged by friends Enid Collins and Virginia Hill to make the move from Houston when Julie found herself confronted by the care of her son, Bud, who was paralyzed in a car accident.
Julie met Bill Roseberry on the Fredericksburg tennis courts. They married and bought the Lehne property on Centre Street where they built their final home. The Roseberrys could be seen on their front porch every afternoon at 5 p.m. for "Porch Time," Julie with her glass of Pinot Grigio, while Bill fed treats to their pets, the neighbors' pets, and visiting wildlife.
Julie was a dedicated Gillespie County Democrat and an active volunteer for many local charity organizations. She was the heart of a long-running Monday Night Potluck group which met often at her house. Her brownie recipe was a secret she would not share.
The oldest living member of St. Barnabas Episcopal Church, Julie was known for her popular Sunday School class, as well as the many church vestments and banners she designed and hand-stitched. Fabric arts was just one of Julie's talents. In her art studio, she painted, beaded, stitched, glued, printed, quilted. She taught art classes at Laity Lodge's Creativity Week and in San Miguel, Mexico.
Julie was as much athlete as artist. She was a competitive tennis player, an avid skier and runner. (She once ran a 5K alongside Willie Nelson.) At age 73, she became a certified yoga teacher and offered one of Fredericksburg's first yoga classes.
Juliet Vay Armer was born Dec. 9, 1929 to Rubye and Buddy Armer in Winfield, Kansas. Other than the mistake of being born in Kansas while her father worked in the oilfields there, Julie was a 7th generation Texan on her father's side of which she was proud. After her parents' divorce, Julie lived for a time with grandparents on their ranch outside New Braunfels. She always said that moving to Fredericksburg made her feel she was back on that ranch, which were happy times.
Predeceased by her son, Bud, Julie is survived by Bill, her husband of 37 years; her daughters, Alex and Kate Finlayson; sons-in-law, Chris Canfield and Steve Riemer; grandchildren Augustus and Juliet; daughter-in-law, Lety Finlayson, and grandchildren, Fernando, Patti, Elizabeth, and Roli. Maybe most cherished of all were Julie's dogs and cats, especially Sunny, Joy and Posie.
The family would like to thank Celia Dominguez for many years of caring for Julie. We are indebted to Lytane Bozle, Cheyenne Terry, Victoria Morales, Amber Schlueter, Rustine Lendermon, and all the staff at CelesteCare and to Judy Roberts of HCM Hospice. We also thank all of Julie's friends who make Fredericksburg a beautiful, tolerant, and open place for those who come seeking community.
Funeral services for Julie will take place at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church, Monday, May 23, at 10 a.m. A reception will follow.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Saint Barnabas Episcopal Church, Hill Country Community Needs Council, or the animal charity of your choice.
