On Sunday, June 27th, Julia (Judy) Alice Lowery, loving wife, mother, and grandmother passed away at 82 years of age in Knoxville, TN.
Julia was born on November 26th, 1938, in Shreveport, LA and was the youngest daughter to Glenn and Hazel Nelson. She moved to Mississippi at a young age where she was raised. She received a Bachelor of Science from the University of Southern Mississippi in 1968 and returned to complete her master's degree in Education in 1977. Julia had a 29-year career as a schoolteacher in Harrison County Mississippi. Julia married Houston F. Lowery Jr in August of 1973. They raised two sons, Stephen, and John.
Julia was very spirited and loved many creative activities. A few of her many hobbies included arts and crafts, painting, wreath making, writing stories, songs, and children's plays. She also loved gardening, cooking southern food and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. She loved Elvis music and always shared her stories about meeting him in her early years. Julia always enjoyed travel and genuinely loved talking about going to the beach. She was known for her outgoing personality, love for the Tennessee Lady VOLS and her family.
Julia was preceded in death by her father Glen, mother Hazel, sister Clara, brother Glen and her husband of 47 years, Houston F. Lowery Jr. She is survived by her two sons and their families, Stephen (Vicky), John (Kristy), her grandchildren Alex, Grace and Julia Kate, her sister Joyce Smith, and many cousins, nephews, and nieces.
A funeral service will be held on July 16th at 10 AM EST at the East Tennessee State Veteran's Cemetery located at 2200 East Governor John Sevier Hwy Knoxville.
In lieu of flowers please donate to the Appalachian Bear Rescue in Townsend, TN where Julia spent many hours volunteering. At ABR she created a bear character named "Speed Bump" to help educate children about bear safety advocacy. Donations can be made in her memory at www.appalachianbearrescue.org
