Judith Ann Goddard, n?e Riordan, was born on December 4, 1935, in South Bend, IN. She is the seventh of the nine children of Dorothy and Robert Riordan. Judy lived in the South Bend-Niles area for most of her life. Judy was in the first graduating class of St. Joseph High School in South Bend, and worked at Memorial Hospital in South Bend.
In 1972, she married Mark Goddard, with whom she went on to have many adventures during their 35 years of marriage. Together they enjoyed 'rock hunting' and made beautiful unique jewelry items with pieces they found for their nieces. Judy and Mark traveled often to Michigan and to Arizona with their 'fifth wheel' camper. They also frequently visited Mark's brother, Russ, in Dallas, Texas to cheer on the Cowboys.
An avid crafter, Judy taught tatting classes at the Greater Niles Senior Citizens' Center and volunteered in the food commodities pantry program. Judy enjoyed spending time with her friends at the Senior Center, especially Dorothy. Judy was a loving aunt to her 38 nieces and nephews, offering a second home for many of them when they came to South Bend for college. She created craft pieces with them, took them out to dinner, and fortified them with "Party Mix," and provided lots of laughs. One of our favorite pastimes with Judy was to bake up a batch of her mother's recipe for cutout Christmas cookies and spend an afternoon decorating them. Judy most especially enjoyed decorating the "Christmas Cow" cookie.
Judy is survived by her devoted brother and sister-in-law, Terry and Cathy Riordan, of South Bend; her sister, Marcia (Bill) Leonard in Huntsville, Alabama; and many nieces and nephews. We will miss her easy-going spirit and sense of humor. Judy was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Joan Laboe and Elaine Pickett; and brothers, Mike, Tom, Pat and Dan.
Judy's family is grateful for the staff at Brentwood of Niles, in particular nurses, Jillian and April, who cared for her (and her cat!) with such kindness in these past two years. We also appreciate the ER staff at Memorial Hospital who treated her during her frequent visits.
