Joyce L. Johnson died peacefully on the morning of February 19, 2022 at the age of 89, from complications of advanced dementia, and is now home with her Heavenly Father.
Known as everyone's "second mother," Joyce is remembered and revered for the way she created a warm home feeling for everyone around her. She taught her children and grandchildren not only how to cook and sew and patch up a wound, but she also showed us all how to nourish each other's souls, lift up each other's accomplishments, and bear hard times with kindness, love, and grace. Aware of the power of simple heart-felt gestures, Joyce was always ready with a gentle cuddle, a slice of hot homemade bread, or a much-loved book. She shared a playful, childlike love for the world with her children and grandchildren, who remember how Joyce indulged whims like baking Christmas cookies in July, just for fun. Joyce just knew how to make family and friends feel special and loved, which they will never forget.
The family's grief is lightened at this time by Joyce's lifelong faith in God and faith in her salvation. Joyce wrote to family in a cherished letter, "I know I will be in Heaven, eternally, with My Father when my life on earth comes to an end. It is so comforting knowing that I do not fear passing on to be with the Lord." We will miss her here on earth but know that she is at home now in Heaven.
Born Joyce Loulene Limmer on June 13, 1932 in Hamilton, Texas, she attended school in Southland, then raised three children in Slaton. After she and her husband C.J. Johnson moved to Lubbock, Joyce began her own business doing what she did best --- creating beautiful spaces for families to enjoy. Channeling her eye for design, comfort, and style into handcrafted custom window coverings and bedding, Joyce shared her love of home with clients across Texas.
In later life, she took up dancing, often driving miles to meet friends at a dance hall. Well into her eighties, Joyce attended several dances a month, always bringing a freshly-baked friendship cake to share and dancing happily for hours. When she wasn't baking or dancing, Joyce could be found reading. Books were a lifelong passion for her, and she shared her favorites readily. After she moved to Plano, Joyce was fortunate enough to meet her long-time companion, Milton Boydstun, who shared her love for laughter and life. Together, they often visited family ranches where Joyce enjoyed watching wildlife while sipping a glass of wine.
Although dementia limited Joyce's activities in recent years, she remained active with family and friends until the end. She helped cook a family dinner on Christmas Eve, 2021, just weeks before she passed. Her family is grateful for those precious memories and for the countless lessons.
Joyce is preceded in death by her husband Clarence and her son Randell. She is survived by daughters Linda Salinas and Brenda Ridnour, sons-in-law Albert Salinas and Thom Ridnour, daughter-in-law Tracy Johnson, and by Milton Boydstun. She is survived by sister Bonnie Paschall and brother Hobert Limmer, and nephews Tony Pricer, Van Pricer, Artie Limmer, and Craig Limmer, all of Lubbock. Surviving grandchildren include Carla Pickrel, Eve Johnson, Alek Ridnour, Eric Johnson, and Marc Johnson.
The family will honor Joyce at a private celebration where she would have wanted it --- at home --- as she is now.
