Joyce Royena-May Hurlbert Obiturary 06.11.1928 - 03.17.2022
Joyce Royena-May Hurlbert was born at home on June 11, 1928 in Haviland, Kansas to Jessica and Roy Martin. Joyce passed away peacefully at home in Stanwood, WA at the age of 93 years "young" on February 17th, 2022. "Joyce - One who brings joy to others", as we all know how fitting and was a perfect decision by her parents. Her middle name Royna-May was named after her father Roy and May after her grandma Parker.
In her younger years Joyce and her parents traveled for her fathers jobs. Her father Roy worked in farming and mining communities traveling to Missouri, Louisiana and Colorado. Finally, in December 1941 they packed up their car and moved to Washington. In 1942 they purchased a small farm in Stanwood, WA. Joyce finished her Sophmore through Senior years in High School and graduated in 1946. Three continuous years was the most she had spent in one place during her school years.
Ray and Joyce met at a dance and the two year romance began. Finally on Joyce's birthday, Ray proposed marriage and gave her a beautiful diamond ring. Ray and Joyce were married on August 14th, 1948.
Joyce raised four busy boys and enjoyed taking them to all their sports, church and music activities. Joyce cherished her family was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She was so proud of all her sons and grandchildren and all their accomplishments. After raising children Ray and Joyce spent many years traveling from Arizona to Alaska. Her best friend and solemate Ray passed away peacefully from ALS on September 23rd, 1998.
After Ray's passing, Joyce spent many years traveling, spending time with her children and grandchildren and playing games and cards with many new and lifelong friends. Joyce lived her life to the fullest and brought so much joy to others.
Joyce is survived by her sons Mike (Sally), Tom (Darlene), Dan (Sally) and Brian (Kathleen); seven grandchildren Lisa, Brad, Matt, Christopher, Jessica, Amanda and Alyssa; one grandchild Elliott as well as many extended family members and close friends.
The celebration of life and service were held at St Cecilia's Catholic Church on February 28th, 2022 at 11:00 am. followed by burial and light lunch at the church.
Memorials can be made to St Cecilia's Catholic Church in Stanwood or a charity of your choice. Arrangements are under the direction of Gilbertson's Funeral Home in Stanwood.
