Joy Estelle Culpepper Welch, 93, died Monday, January 3, 2022, after a short illness.
Mrs. Welch was born August 24, 1928, to Lela and Matthew Culpepper in Stockdale, Texas. She graduated from Southwest Texas State Teacher's College in San Marcos, Texas (1952). Joy came to the Valley as a bride in 1953 and settled in Pharr with her husband, Malcolm, where she taught school for 32 years until she retired in 1984.
Joy was a faithful member of the Pharr Church of Christ and taught Bible classes for many years. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, La Rivista Book Review Club, Friends of the Pharr Library, Pan American Round Table, Retired Teachers Association, and M&M's Club. Joy also volunteered at the McAllen International Museum, McAllen Medical Hospital, and the Pharr Library.
Mrs. Welch was preceded in death by husband Malcolm Welch, and sons James Bennett (Benny) Welch and Wade Welch. She is survived by daughters Rosanne (Kent) Shuttlesworth of Jacksonville, Texas and Jere Welch of Abilene, Texas; daughter-in-law Mary Welch of San Antonio, Texas; grandchildren Autumn Shuttlesworth of Jacksonville, Texas, Jason (Carrie) Shuttlesworth of Longview, Texas, Laura Anne Welch of Abilene, Texas, Trey (Cristi) Welch of San Antonio, Texas, and Tyler (Catherine) Welch of Terrell, Texas; and five great grandchildren.
Visitation and funeral will take place at the Pharr Church of Christ on Saturday, January 15th, with visitation from 10-11 A.M. and the funeral immediately following at 11 A.M. Burial will follow at Valley Memorial Gardens at 1 P.M. Pallbearers will be her son-in-law Kent Shuttlesworth; grandsons Jason Shuttlesworth, Trey Welch, and Tyler Welch; great grandson Camden Welch; and nephews Brent Thornton, John Thornton, and Ted Thornton.
