Joy Schramm Thomas was born on June 27, 1921, in Houston, and died January 19, 2019, in Austin. She grew up in Houston and married Bill Thomas in 1941. She remained in Houston and raised her two children there. She worked as a receptionist for an engineering firm and also for a flower shop.
In 2013, when her health was failing, she moved to Austin to be near her cousin, Jo Ann Smith. Joy lived out her final years at Westminster Manor in Austin.
Joy is predeceased by her parents, Edward and Layke Schramm, her siblings, Edward Craig Schramm and Bonnie Schramm Gray (Robert), her husband Bill Thomas, and he children, April Thomas, and Scott Thomas.
Those who knew Joy thought she was appropriately named. She loved being around people and often made them laugh. Her own laugh was very infectious and memorable. Joy was very talented at growing flowers and her own garden was her refuge. Another of her hobbies was shell collecting. She was a member of the Houston Conchology Society.
Joy is survived by he nephew Greg Gray of Houston Susan Foster of Knoxville, AR, and many other loving relatives and friends.
The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the excellent staff at Westminster Manor Assisted Living in Austin. They went out of their way to help Joy and make her feel at home. She considered them her family. Also, Halcyon Home in Austin provided loving caregiving and Hospice care in her final days.
Services will be private at Forest Park Lawndale Funeral Home in Houston, TX. Memorials can be sent to St. Andrews Presbyterian Church in Houston, or to any favorite charity.
