Josephine M. Shemchek, 79, of Peckville, died Monday afternoon at home, surrounded by her loving family. She was the widow of Walter P. Shemchek Sr., who died in 1998.
Born in Phelps, Kentucky, daughter of the late Talbert and Jane Coleman Stump, she graduated from high school in Kentucky, and was of the Catholic faith. She worked in the local garment industry, and before retirement, was employed at Gertrude Hawk in Dunmore. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend to many, who loved her WWE World Wrestling Entertainment sporting events, going to casinos and trips to Atlantic City.
She supported many organizations and memberships, including veterans organizations and the Wounded Warrior Project, the Boys Club of America, the St. Jude Foundation and the ASPCA.
She is survived by one son, Walter Shemchek Jr. and wife, Ann of Sturges; three grandchildren, Kasey, Molly and Ryan; two daughters, Joann Wickizer and husband, Mark of Dickson City, and Deborah Patronick and husband, Edward of Peckville; and several cousins, nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband Walter, she was preceded in death by several brothers and sisters.
There are no funeral home viewing hours. There will be a funeral Divine Liturgy on Tuesday, July 19, at 10 a.m. in S.S. Cyril & Methodius Church, River Street, Olyphant, to be celebrated by the Rev. Nestor Iwasiw, pastor. Interment of cremated remains will be private. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 9 a.m. until time of service.
