DEFIANCE - Josephine Corrine Roehrig, age 82 of Defiance, passed away with her family by her side on Wednesday, September 28, 2022 at Brookview Healthcare Center in Defiance.
She was born on August 1, 1940 to the late Clifton and Amelia (Villareal) Martinez in Baton Rouge, LA. On April 18, 1960 she married Lynn R. Roehrig, who preceded her in death on December 12, 2019.
Josie was raised with eight siblings in Louisiana, and later was raised in Napoleon, Ohio. She graduated from Napoleon High School, and was active in the Library Club, the Choir and Quartet. Josie was the first Freshman member of the Women's Ensemble and was involved in several singing competitions. As a young adult she enjoyed playing tennis. She was always helping those in need and would welcome homeless people to stay at her home. Josie attended college and studied Real Estate and Photography.
Josie was a faithful member of St. Mary Catholic Church and was active in the Altar & Rosary Society, Toledo Diocesan Catholic Women's Committee, and she volunteered with the Food Pantry. She strongly supported Right To Life and honored the rights of the unborn child. She worked at KMart, Bargain City, Sears, Elder Beerman, JC Penney and Meijer. She was a budget advisory for Good Sam families, and was a Teacher's Aide and helped with summer school for migrant children.
She was a proud member of the Democratic Party and was Past President of Defiance Women's Democratic Party. She attended several marches for affordable housing and was an election poll worker. Josie was a Fort to Port Committee member and reported information to the State of Ohio.
Josie will be greatly missed by her children; Tara (Dave) Kaufman, Olin "Marty" Roehrig, Dawn (Jon) Davis, Christopher (Kristen) Roehrig, Bret (Gloria) Roehrig and Corrinne (Brad) Kunesh, her siblings; Manuel Martinez, Clifton Martinez Jr., and Daniel (Janet) Martinez, and sister-in-law, Hazel Martinez. She also leaves behind 19 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Lynn Raymond Roehrig, daughter, Lia Joy Roehrig, brother, John Martinez, sisters, Lucille "Lucy" Simms, Amelia "Millie" Tamalunas, and Armenia "Alice" Stanton, and her sisters-in-law, Rosa and Colleen Martinez.
Visitation will be held from 2:00 to 8:00 pm on Sunday, October 2, 2022 at Schaffer Funeral Home in Defiance, with a Rosary Service at 2:00 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, October 3, 2022 at St. Mary Catholic Church, with Fr. Dave Cirata officiating. Burial will follow the service at Riverside Cemetery.
