Joseph Riley Sturm of Morgana Drive, Shepherdstown, passed away Monday, August 20, 2019, following a short illness. He was born December 27, 1971, at St. Joseph's Hospital in Buckhannon, West Virginia. Joe was the son of Henry Alan and Elizabeth Fletcher Sturm, both of whom survive in Shepherdstown. On May 25, 2002, he married Lisa Marie Crohe who survives. Joe and Lisa were the parents of three children, Maya Marie, Jack Riley, and Norah Cate, all at home. Joe is also survived by a brother Michael Alan Sturm, wife Sara and a nephew, Kevin, and nieces Isabella and Amanda. Also surviving are his father-in-law, Edward Joseph Crohe Jr and wife Ann , a brother-in-law, Edward Joseph Crohe III his wife Jen and daughters Kylie and Meghan. There are also several aunts, uncles and cousins.
He was a graduate of Buckhannon-Upshur High School and holds both a BA and an MPA from West Virginia University. He was employed by the Department of Veterans Affairs in Washington, DC. Joe was extremely proud of his three children. He was also proud of his military service as a combat veteran of two wars. He served in HHC 3/35, 1st Armored Division during the First Gulf War. During that enlistment he was deployed with the 1st Battalion, 9th Cavalry Regiment to the Mid-East on two occasions following the conclusion of the war. During the War on Terror he was a member of the 116th Infantry Battalion, 29th Division, Virginia Army National Guard and was deployed to Afghanistan from July, 2004 through July, 2005.
At his request the body will be cremated. A memorial service conducted by Rev. G. T. Schramm will be held on Saturday, August 24, at the Eackles-Spencer, & Norton Funeral Home in Harpers Ferry, at 11:00 AM. Interment will be in Arlington National Cemetery at date to be determined. The family requests that in-lieu of flowers donations be made to Wounded Warriors or the charity of choice.
