Captain Joseph Bonsignore (USMC Ret.), 88, of Woodbridge, VA passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 7, 2021, at Harbor Chase Assisted Living Facility, Woodbridge, VA. Joseph, more commonly known as "Pop", was born October 10, 1932, in Baltimore, MD. In March 1950, at the age of 17, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. Later that year, in December, he married his wife of over 60 years, Rosalie Bonsignore. Over the next 20 years he was stationed at many stateside locations with overseas tours in Cuba, Okinawa and Vietnam. During his Vietnam tour, he was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant. After retiring from active duty in 1970, he continued to serve his beloved Marine Corps as Head of Budget Operations. From 1987 to 1994, he worked as a Project Manager with National Industries for the Severely Handicapped (NISH). Since 1988, he and Rose spent much of their time at their beach home at North Topsail Beach, NC. There, Pop enjoyed being outside where he could be seen casting a line, throwing a net, or checking the crab pots out on the dock. Many memories were made as he coached his grandchildren & great grandchildren during their first catch. He is preceded in death by his wife, Rosalie Bonsignore.
He is survived by his children, Joanne Azzarano and husband Richard of Woodbridge, VA; Joseph Bonsignore Jr. and wife Elizabeth of Annapolis, MD; Terese Pugh and husband Gary of Woodbine, GA; Christopher Bonsignore and wife Joan of Brandy Station, VA; Connie Monroe of Fairfax, VA; Grandchildren, Jennifer Lopez and husband Christian of Stafford VA; Sean Azzarano of Oceanside, CA; Tim Azzarano and wife Jessica of San Diego, CA; Lindsey Loving and husband Richard of Fairfax, VA; Sarah Pugh of Kingsland, GA; Michael and Matthew Bonsignore of Annapolis, MD; Great Grandchildren, Noah and Mason Lopez of Stafford, VA; Conner Pugh of Kingsland GA.
Viewing will be held at Mountcastle Turch Occoquan on Sunday, September 19, 2021, from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Services will be held at the United States Marine Corps Museum Chapel on Monday, September 20, 2021, at 11:00 am followed by the burial at 1:00 pm at the Quantico National Cemetery. Full military honors will be observed. Patriot guard will provide escort. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Research Hospital or The Marine Corps Heritage Foundation.
