Mr. Joseph Thomas "JT" Bishop, age 91, passed away Tuesday April 12, 2022 in local nursing care facility.
Mr. Bishop was born Sep 25, 1930 in Cherokee County, AL the son of Waldo and Roxie (Conaway) Bishop. Mr. Bishop was a life-long educator, holding degrees and certificates from Jacksonville State University, Alabama College (now University of Montevallo) and the University of Georgia. During his 40 plus year career he taught, administrated and coached at Summerville High School, Lyerly High School, McHenry School, Coosa High School and the Floyd County Alternative Education night school. Even after his retirement, he learned to play the dulcimer and taught others. Mr. Bishop was an assistant coach on a state champion basketball team and even was a varsity head coach for a time but, being a teacher at heart loved teaching the game more than strategizing. He coached many sports over his career but basketball most often. He had a knack for remembering names. He often remembers students from many years ago. Many of those same students were the folks he would turn to for various repairs or other business. They became the very fabric of Rome GA and he was proud that he played a part in their success as well. Mr. Bishop was proud of his military service. He held a notable distinction of having technically been in the Army and Air Force simultaneously. He had joined an Air Force Reserve unit but, his draft board insisted he be in the Army. He served in the Army with an Air Force service number which was often questioned. Mr. Bishop attended several reunions of his military unit even hosting one in Townsend, TN, one of his favorite places on earth.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years Lillian (Johnson) Bishop, son Kevin Bishop and daughter-in-law Sheila Doody Bishop.
